Bourbon

Bourbon is one of the original Cultivars of Coffee arabica.

This is an important part of the Big Three primary varieties along with Typica and Ethiopian Heirloom. Bourbon is the main linage of many other quality varieties within Latin America.

It has become one of the most culturally and genetically important. It's So sweet, like the Pinor Noir of Coffee, They don't have huge yields and can get damaged easier than many other varieties but the results are worth the effort.

The French missionaries introduced Bourbon from Yemen to Bourbon Island  (now known as Reunion). In 1800 it started to move around the globe as the missionaries travelled. thus the spread of Bourbon.  It made its way to South America around 1860 and then rapidly expanded. It's still a popular variety today in many places. It was introduced to India as well as Ethiopian landraces. Nowadays, there are many Bourbon-like varieties found in East Africa, but none exactly match the distinct Bourbon variety that can be found in Latin America. The many Sub Species that are from the mutation from Bourbon are

  • N39, SL 28, SL 34, Acaia, Caturra, Jackson, Moka / Mocha / Mokka
  • Mibirizi, Tekisik (or Tekisic), Villa Sarchi (Costa Rica)
  • Pacas (El Salvador), Pointu Bourbon / Laurina

Hence why it's very Cultural important in the linage of coffee.

Let us just enjoy and respect this very important coffee and check the tasting profile image to see what we can find from a great cup of Bourbon.
